'Found' Poetry from the IOE R&D Network Conference - 28 June 2016
Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words and phrases ‘found’ in other sources, and reframing them as poetry; so a ‘found’ poem must use only the original words – what someone else has said or written. A ‘found’ poem can take single words or phrases out of a whole conversation, and mix up or repeat any of the original words to create rhythms and rhymes; so it ends up having its own shape.
As a form of qualitative data collection, it works by capturing the personal tones of voice and individual turns of expression, as well as key terms in the ‘dominant discourse’; by taking single words/phrases out of context and juxtaposing them with other words/phrases, the poem will typically reveal something interesting and meaningful about the collective atmosphere. And, because of the particular choices of words and phrases made, the poem will also be imbued with the writer’s own individuality and concerns. Found poems can be used alongside other forms of data collection to make a multiple record of a complex event or situation.
Throwing It Open
It’s an uncertain time, it’s why I’m here. It’s very complicated. I’m at the very beginning Of thinking about this, hoping to observe Something magical. It’s an uncertain time, I was really struggling, I was extremely nervous Actually listening. Actually listening it’s a slowing Down, I’m going to go quite fast, we need to know What to do, we just move on and move on. It’s very expensive. I’ve got a lot to say, It’s all about listening to how that person thinks – I asked him what actually moved him. Of course as human beings, who you are In the world, in the 22nd century, we are Struggling: how can you be patient when you’re Worried about not doing it properly, Being told to do things, simple quick answers? I’m going to go quite fast. It’s an uncertain time, A national obsession, that little hamster wheel – They don’t let the students breathe really, Sharpen their pencils. You have to be willing To stop. It opened my eyes, I found myself Holding back. It was like a two minutes’ silence, The gift of listening, the time and the trust, A beautiful thing: lonely souls falling in love, Jazz music, laughter, the beginning of wisdom. It’s why I came. A developing self-assessment
to cover all bases. Collaborative capacity in mind, to operate in a multicultural world. We have a question more deepening than sustaining sustaining, developing, embedding, observing self-regulated learners A habit of mind that you can develop over time. Be the expert within and between, great decisions that are neatly packaged. To design our future and blend and mix learning from failure at a wide development angle Nurture the professionalism as it requires inquiry and innovation. Be the expert and preach to the converted. Don’t just become obsessed, enrich the community rigorously stepping back into the comfort zone is a challenge of leadership drawing on hope. Chevonne Brown Student Phoenix High School What would they look like
on a single side of A4 When arriving - a conversation that needs to be with words? These external effects that create too many degrees of awareness? NOW tweak it Not rushing to conclusions Stop, be humble, inquire humbly and equally challenge someone, take the next steps Do you really have the passion? Or do you sort of go? Is there something out there that is a plan with action? What works for you? What works with you? Not even words make things add up. What would they look like On a single side of A4 When arriving - a conversation that needs to be with words? Aaliyah Rahman Student from Phoenix High School |
Fast Changing Times
What is our starting point? We have to start with ourselves I am thinking… I have no idea what that means. But we have to remember, as we are moving forward there are questions you don’t know the answer to. Don’t just become obsessed. I am thinking… everything you do -those individual differences could mean change. Not stretching so much, It’s about being passionate. Design the future. Lets give ourselves a little bit of a moment. We are here, We are leaders. Javiera Quirot Student Phoenix High School Is there anything missing? We’re frustrated, pushing, fast-changing times tweak it, change it, don’t put that in SLOW DOWN is there anything missing? stop, be practical, powerful, obsessed but humble, aware of human feeling and well being. Is there anything missing? No, no it’s high quality, a good way, a better way, one stage ahead. One statement, two statements, three sets of words. A loaded point. Who’s driving?
These are fast changing times
Who’s driving?
We are in a global world
Who’s driving?
Computation, new media, symbols, signs…
These are fast changing times
Who’s driving?
Think differently!
What does that mean?
Improve our practice through innovation
Orientation – take the development angle
Improve our practice
Becoming wise
Evidence informed – opening doors
Triangle!
The importance of emotion, at the centre of learning, an organic ecosystem
Ask young people how much challenge there is in their learning
How does that affect us?
Anxious?
Frustration?
I play the piano badly!
Practice…practice…practice
Inquiry is about learning
I don’t mean to preach, but this could mean change
Bringing those connections
Not rushing…
Powerful learning.
Our learning doesn’t just take place in our classrooms, in schools
Connect with outsiders beyond the school

Singapore
Ask questions you don’t know the answer of
Toby!
Toby talks about challenge
Thinking together is important
What are the implications for everything else?
Throw it out
Slow it down
I’m thinking my way through this
Change the mindset, things can fly
I don’t mean this negatively…
